Strategy of the Lotus Sutra
Masakado was renowned as a brave general who had mastered the art of war, yet he was defeated by the emperor's armies. Fan K'uai and Chang Liang also failed in the end. Faith alone is what really matters. No matter how earnestly Nichiren prays for you, if you lack faith, it will be like trying to set fire to wet tinder. Spur yourself to muster the power of faith. Regard your survival as wondrous. Employ the strategy of the Lotus Sutra before any other. Then, just as the sutra says, "All enemies are crushed." These golden words will never prove false. Believe them wholeheartedly. The heart of strategy and swordsmanship derives from the Mystic Law. A coward cannot have any of his prayers answered.

The twenty-third day of the tenth month
BACKGROUND:
This letter was written to Shijo Kingo on October 23, 1279. Nichiren Daishonin was then fifty-eight. Because Lord Ema placed such trust in Kingo, he was the object of bitter jealousy among his fellow samurai. Finally, the situation came to a head and he was ambushed by his enemies. He informed the Daishonin about the attack and received this letter in reply.
The Daishonin tells Kingo that he survived because of the good fortune created by his faith in the Lotus Sutra. Although Kingo's watchfulness and physical prowess played their part, without the protection of the Buddhist gods, he could never have won the fight. Thus the Daishonin teaches him that faith must always come first -- before any other tactics or strategy.
四條金吾(시죠싱고)殿答書(전답서)
( 법화경의 병법)
마사카도(將門)는 武將(무장)으로서의 이름을 떨치고 兵法(병법)의 大事(대사)를 窮究(궁구)하였으나, 王命(왕명)에는 敗(패)하였도다. 樊 (번쾌). 張良(장량)도 所用(소용)이 없었으니, 다만 마음만이 重要(중요)하니라. 아무리 日蓮이 祈願(기원)을 한다해도 不信(불신)한다면, 젖은 부싯깃을 대고 부시를 치는 것과 같이 될 것이니, 더욱 勉勵(면려)하여 强盛(강성)하게 信力(신력)을 다 내도록 하시라. 지난번의 存命(존명)은 不可思議(불가사의)하다고 생각하시라. 어떠한 兵法(병법)보다도 法華經(법화경)의 兵法(병법)을 쓰실지어다. [諸餘怨敵(제여원적). 皆悉 滅(개실최멸)]의 金言(금언)은 헛되지 않으리라. 兵法(병법) 劍形(검형)의 大事(대사)도 이 妙法(묘법)으로부터 나왔느니라. 깊이 信心(신심)을 取(취)하시라. 결코 겁이 많아서는 不可能(불가능)하니라. 恐恐謹言(공공근언).

배 경 :
이 편지는 1279년 10월 23일 시죠깅고에게 쓰신 것이다. 일련대성인께서는 당시 58세이셨다. 주군 에마가 깅고를 상당히 신임하였기 때문에, 동료 무사들 사이에서 깅고는 적의를 품은 질투심의 대상이었다. 마침내, 상황이 위기상태까지 왔고, 깅고는 적들에 의해 매복당했다. 깅고는 대성인께 그 공격을 알렸고, 답장으로 이 편지를 받았다.
대성인께서는 깅고에게 법화경을 믿어서 만들어진 복운때문에 살아남았다고 말씀하신다. 비록 깅고의 주의력과 신체적 용맹이 역할을 했지만, 제천의 가호가 없었다면, 그는 그 싸움에서 승리할 수 없었을 것이다. 그러므로 신심이 어느 다른 책략 혹은 병법보다 항상 우선되어야 한다고 깅고에게 가르치시고 있다.
